Keftedes – Cypriot Meatballs

Introduction

Cypriot keftedes are usually made with pork, though some cooks may combine pork with beef. Rest ingredients include grated potato and Cypriot flavors such as mint and cinnamon as well as lemons! If you are on diet, probably this Is not the lightest cypriot dish to cook, since, regardless of the ingredients, keftedes tend to be deep fried!

Ingredients

  • 1kg ground pork meat
  • 1 large onion grated
  • 2 large potatoes grated
  • 2 eggs
  • ½ cup of chopped parsley
  • 3 tablespoons of dried mint
  • 2 tablespoons of olive oil
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 1 teaspoon of baking powder
  • About 3 cups of oil for frying

Instructions

  • Add all the ingredients in a bowl and mix well using your hands.
  • Shape the meat balls the size you want and place in a large tray.
  • Heat the oil and fry the keftedes. Be careful not to fry too many keftedes at a time, as this will decrease the temperature of the oil.
  • Take them out of the pan once the meatball has a nice brown color all over.

Recipe Note:

For those of you counting calories keftedes can also be grilled in the oven (at 200 degrees C for about 30 -35 minutes). Make sure both sides are cooked before you take them out of the oven!
